Job Summary :

The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) is seeking a qualified individual to supervise staff and inmate work crew activities in the operation of the Wild Horse Program at the Arizona Correctional Industries (ACI) within Arizona State Prison Complex - Florence.

Job Duties :

  • Oversees the operations of the ACI horse holding and training to include the direct supervision of staff and on-the-job training of inmates
  • Inspects work area(s) for health and safety hazards and ensures ACI safety compliance in all areas and responsibilities as well as the operations of machinery, utilized in the productions process
  • Monitors and controls inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Ensures all Wild Horse Program equipment, machinery, and tools supporting the Wild Horse Program are operational and properly serviced
  • Communicates with customers and vendors
  • Remain up to date on State and Federal regulations pertaining to agribusiness and the Wild Horse Program
  • Responsible for the health, disease prevention, and wellbeing of live animals
  • Oversees recordkeeping of shots, veterinary visits, and nutritional needs
  • Drives on State business
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) :

    Knowledge of :

  • Supervisory and managerial techniques for assigned inmate workforce
  • Agribusiness, including agrochemicals, breeding, distribution farm machinery, processing, as well as marketing and retail sale
  • Horse holding, including animal feeds, agreements / contracts, and equine care
  • Safety issues pertaining to Wild Horses and burros
  • Equipment and materials utilized in the operation of a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wild Horse and burro holding facility
  • Proficiency in personal computer applications with Microsoft and Google Suite
  • Divisional and Departmental policies and procedures including fire and safety standards, and regulations, and security requirements and practices
  • Shipping, receiving, inventory control, product delivery, and storage
  • Hazardous material handling
  • Skill in :

  • Operation of BLM holding facility to include maintenance and operation of equipment and machinery utilized
  • Verbal and written communication
  • Leadership, supervision, and management
  • Decision making, and problem-solving
  • Analyzing, giving directions, and administration
  • Motivation, constructive criticism, and team building
  • Ability to :

  • Conduct on-the-job training
  • Adhere to and enforce ADCRR policies and procedures
  • Work with inmates function effectively in a variety of environments from ADCRR and ACI central office to all agribusiness and ranch territories within correctional facilities
  • Adapt to changing requirement while maintaining a constant focus on the requirements of sound correctional practice
  • Motivate staff and inmates in the absence of supervisory authority
  • Selective Preference(s) :

  • Prior training and / or experience working with horses, construction, and operating heavy equipment; level training with a minimum of three (3) years of experience.
  • May include vocational courses at the post-secondary level in a related field

  • Supervisory seminar and training
  • Knowledge of correctional security practices and experience managing business employing prison inmates is preferred
  • Pre-Employment Requirements :

    Requires possession of, and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.

    Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

    Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation, drug test, and a medical / physical examination

    Retirement :

    Positions in this classification participate in the Corrections Officer Retirement Plan (CORP).
