Job Description :

Two staff scientist positions (A and B) are open at the LDM beamline. The successful candidates will be part of the LDM team in charge of operating and developing the LDM beamline on FERMI.

The successful candidate A will be in charge of maintaining, operating, and developing the experimental end-station detectors, which comprise the beamline’s own ion TOF spectrometer, VMI spectrometer, photon scattering detector, and other ones brought by partners / users (e.

g. : photon spectrometer, magnetic bottle spectrometer).

The successful candidate B will be in charge of maintaining, operating, and developing the experimental end-station with particular focus on sample sources and associated diagnostics, including those brought to the facilitiy by partners / users, and on expanding the possibilities for pump-probe experiments.

The successful candidates will provide high-quality support to the external users of the beamline, and contribute to the definition and execution of the in-

house research activities. They are also expected to develop a research program, as well as being involved in submitting proposals to suitable funding agencies and establishing new research collaborations.

Qualifications :

A Ph.D. in Physics, or a related discipline is required together with post-doctoral experience and a suitable publication record in combined synchrotron / FEL-

based spectroscopies of rarefied matter. Demonstrated ability in promoting and performing independent work in a group-oriented research environment is expected.

Familiarity with energy and time-resolved spectroscopy, as well as with pump-probe experiments, and the ability to perform the related data analysis will be considered assets.

  • For position A, proven experience in the construction of scientific equipment relevant to synchrotron / FEL beamlines is required;
  • this includes expert skills in simulations of charged-particles optics.

    For position B, proven broad experience in the handling of molecules in different environments and in their characterization by means of photoionization sources is required.

    Good time management skills and ability to prioritize are expected, together with the ability to interact with staff and facility users at all levels and to work productively as part of a multi-

    disciplinary team. Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential. A working knowledge of the Italian language is desirable.

    The deadline for the submission of application is December 30, 2018. The appointment envisioned is a permanent position.

    The salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the candidate.
