The objective of the project is to improve the calculation methods for the geothermal energy assessment of tunnels. Numerical and geostatistical methods are intended to be used to reach this goal.

The numerical methods will be used for the dynamic calculation of energy transfer between rock / soil and the tunnel lining (including the heat absorbers).

The geostatistical tools will be used to estimate the initial state of ground temperature (and other interest variables, such as hydraulic and thermal conductivity) around the tunnel.

The initial state is influenced both by natural conditions and, in urban environment, by the presence of buildings (subsurface urban heat island).

The project can be performed on a case study : the BBT tunnel system, currently under construction, for the railway connection of Brenner between Italy and Austria.

Part of the tunnel system had already been object of previous studies by the research group.
