Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Logistics, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all peacekeeping missions around the world.

This position is located in the United Nations Global Service Centre, (UNGSC) Brindisi, Italy within the Customer Service Unit of Supply Chain Service and is for a temporary period of six months.

This position reports directly to the Chief, Delivery and Return Section, Supply Chain Service and supervises four staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Provides client service management support to UN field operations and other UN entities.
  • Coordinates, tracks and reports on service requests within supply chain management.
  • Acts as the primary focal point for the production of field mission requests.
  • Undertakes research with respect to the preparation, compilation and implementation of communication strategies.
  • Initiates requisitions coordinates the execution of technical evaluations for long and short-term contracts.
  • Provides support in researching and obtaining data and documents related to field Missions.
  • Maintains liaison with relevant departments and field missions with respect to the status of procurement, delivery, financial and matters.
  • Manages the operations of a small detachment / unit and supervises assigned staff.
  • Investigates and coordinates the solutions of problems.
  • Assists in identifying common issues and best practices, making recommendations and developing plan to achieve objectives and increase efficiency.
  • Designs and develops relevant databases and logistics programmes.
  • Formulates and monitors budget allocations.
  • Performs other duties as required.

    Education

    High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

    Work Experience

    A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in logistics services / supply chain or a related field is required.

    A minimum of five (5) years experience with service management or client relationship management with a complex international organisation is required.

    A minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience is required.

    Experience with developing and implementing communication strategies is desirable.

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.

    Knowledge of French is desirable.

    Assessment

    Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

    Special Notice

    This position is temporarily available for six months with a possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

    While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

    Recruitment for this position is done on a local basis.

    This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country.

    Applicants who are Italian nationals or nationals of a member state of the European Union need to upload a copy of their national passport.

    All other applicants need to have a valid work permit for Italy and need to upload a copy of such work permit. All other applicants, except current UNGSC staff members in Brindisi, need to provide a Certificato Penale and Certificato di Carichi Pendenti.

    Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Secretariat.

    Having passed the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) in English at Headquarters, ECA, ESCWA, UNOG, UNOV, ICTR, or ICTY may be recognized in place of the GGST, pending confirmation of validity.

    This temporary job opening may be limited to "internal candidates," who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.

    16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15. Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.

    Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation.

    Retirees above the mandatory age of separation who wish to be considered for the current temporary job opening must indicate the reason for their last separation as "retirement.

  • Such retirees shall not be employed by the Organization, unless (a) the operational requirements of the Organization cannot be met by staff members who are qualified and available to perform the required functions;
  • and (b) the proposed employment would not adversely affect the career development or redeployment opportunities of other staff members and represents both a cost-effective and operationally sound solution to meet the needs of the service.

    United Nations Considerations

    According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.

    Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
