The iCub team () at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to work on the topic of robot control for human-

robot interaction (HRI) .

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to develop methods to generate realistic movements on our humanoid robots.

The task involves the development of principled control methods and relative software to move our humanoid robots from an easy to use interface.

Starting point can be human motion capture data (e.g. using our 10-camera Vicon system) or qualitative description utilizing existing motion primitives (also extracted from human data).

The goal is to develop a tool that allows any of the iCub users to generate movement and sequences of behaviors / movements without hacking into the low-

level controllers of the robot. The resulting software library will be used in a series of human-robot interaction experiments.

Additional information

This research is part of a large-scale project, funded directly by IIT, that aims at developing innovative robotic technologies applied to the diagnosis and therapy of neuro-

developmental disorders (NDDs), as well as to study neurotypical development. Evidence from research on neuroplasticity indicates that early diagnosis followed by appropriate intervention is critical to optimize the outcome for children suffering from many NDDs, including autism, and improve their skills and functioning in daily social environment.

The theragnostic robotics program will integrate cognitive neuroscience, robotics and electronics to address the following grand challenges :

  • Improve the design of robots by tuning it to the needs of both typically and atypically developing individuals;
  • Design, develop, and test advanced robotic technologies for accurate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to autism and other NDDs;
  • Enhance the social, cognitive and sensorimotor functioning of both typical and atypical developing individuals by developing innovative sensorial technologies and rehabilitation procedures.
  • Required qualifications / skills

  • PhD in computer science, robotics, computer engineering or related fields;
  • Knowledge of C / C++ programming languages and Linux / Windows development tools;
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in English (written and spoken);
  • Experience in robotics and / or automatic control.
  • Desired skills

  • Knowledge of basic machine learning, optimization techniques;
  • Knowledge of middleware for robotics (e.g. YARP or ROS);
  • Experience in control or motion planning of robots.
